Greenwashing are very common right now. No matter it is a big global company or a small personal company. They use advertisements and celebrities to make their products as “green”. There are three disadvantages of greenwashing. The first one is consumers are tired of “green” and they don’t believe products. The second one is people do not want to change greenwashing and they become adapt to it. The third one is greenwashers become more crazy and only put their eyes on benefits.
The first one is consumers are tired of “green” and they don’t believe products. “ It’s little wonder that some consumers are experiencing whtat the Tennessee-based consumer research firm The Shelton Group calls “ green fatigue.” (Greg Campbell, 2008. Para. 8). All the companies use greenwashing and all of products are “green”. Can you believe that? Consumers have know become lose their confidence of products. “ The proliferation of “green” products- remember the chewing gum – remember the chewing gum- has distracted consumers from the important choices that could really make a difference, rendering them largely “clueless” about how to affect change.” (Greg Campbell, 2008, Para. 20).
The second one is people do not want to change greenwashing and they become adapt to it. If greenwashing is very common in the world, consumers will think it as usual. They will not want to change it. “ Few people are taking action to deal with the threat of climate change, although over the past 12 months the vast majority have come to accept that it poses a real threat to the world.” (Juliette Jowit & Robin McKie, 2007. Para. 2). If people do not change greenwashing, it will hurt human rights. Companies will lie to consumers and their products are not “green”. In the end, greenwashing will become right because no body want to change it.
The third one is greenwashers will become crazy and just put their eyes on benefits. If greenwashing can help companies make more benefits and people do not against it, anyone will work hard on it. On the other hand, they will do more greenwashing that can hurt consumers. “ Greenwashers manufacture and market popularity. If it’s manufactured fast enough, it doesn’t allow green consumers the time to check and raise concerns about the authenticity of corporate claims.” (Environmental Leader, 2007. Para. 2).
